Moving House: Checklist for who to notify and when

Moving house can be a time consuming period in our lives. Get organised in the lead up. Use our checklist for who to notify you are moving house and when, so you're ready to focus on packing and moving.



1. Government services to notify you are moving house

To make sure you don’t miss out on any important government payments or information, make sure you change your address with government services. You may be able to login to your MyGov account and update all your connected services at once. These should be notified a couple of weeks leading up to the move.

  • Services Australia: Centrelink, Australian Tax Office, Medicare, Child Support.

  • Australian Electoral Commission

  • Local Government Councils – ensure you will not be paying rates beyond the date you are responsible for the property you are moving from plus you might want to check your new council area services for things like bulk rubbish removal and recycling and bin days


2. Financial services to notify you are moving house

Although much if your banking is done online – you wouldn’t want to forget and have a new card delivered to an old address, or end up with 'lost super' because you didn't receive your annual statements.

  • Banks, credit card companies

  • Insurance Companies - house, health

  • Superannuation

It is best to notify these institutions a couple of weeks prior to the move to ensure the security of your personal documents. To be able to charge the correct rate of insurance the company will have to assess the new property and make adjustments. The more time informing these companies, the more time you will have to check quotes.



3. Motoring services to notify you are moving house

If something happens to your car at your new house and you haven't notified your insurance company it may not be valid. Likewise you want any notices to come to your house

  • Insurance - third party compulsory, comprehensive

  • Toll services


4. Health services to notify you are moving house

If you are moving out of the area, you want to be able to transmit or send medical files to new Doctors or Dentist. Likewise for your furry family members. If not, it may just be a matter of ensuring privacy if any notices to come to your house

5. School services to notify you are moving house

New educational institutions and preschools need to be notified as soon as possible as they may need to hold a place for your child or children. If you are not moving out of the area, it may just be a matter of ensuring privacy if any notices to come to your house. If you have a place in after or before school care that is changing you may need to give them a certain amount of notice to adjust fees

6. Utility services to notify you are moving house

You want to be comfortable as soon as you arrive at your new house right, and you don't want to pay for anything at your old house for longer than necessary. So its vital to notify these services at the right times. Moving house is also good time to compare that you have the best electricity rates.   • Water and Sewage (sometimes covered by council)

  • Telephone and NBN or Internet Service Provider


7. Estate Agents, Landlords or Strata

Who this is on your list will be personal to your situation, if you are renting your landlord or estate agent will need to be told, and you will contractually have to tell them with a specific amount of notice.

8. Moving services to notify

Will you be hiring help to move? Will you be hiring help to clean? Or will you need to hire a truck or carpet cleaning equipment? Removalists will need to be notified at least a couple of weeks prior to the move - more if its 'spring move' season. It may also be beneficial and cheaper to hire a truck as that way there is no labour costs involved. Any cleaning services to be booked a couple of weeks prior for after the move has taken place

9. Friends and family to notify you are moving house

Would you like some visitors in your new place? Don't forget to inform your loved ones by sending new details via text message or over the phone instead of social media platforms to let them know where they can send a Christmas card. Neighbours will also be interested not only in your move, but to look out for new neighbours.

10. Who else to notify when you are moving house?

While lots of things are now communicated online, you don't want to miss something that might be sent in the post. Think loyalty card providers, credit institutions, libraries, community groups, employers and more who may send you something that you will not receive if they don't have your up to date details. It might be worth also investing in a mail forwarding service or Post Office Box until you know for sure that all of your mail has been re directed to the new address.
